About Us

Amos Pewter designs and handcrafts pewter gifts and keepsakes in an open studio located in Mahone Bay on the

South Shore of Nova Scotia. Our artisans began making pewter gifts and keepsakes in 1974 in the vacant boat building shop (circa 1880) that houses the workshop today. At Amos Pewter, designers and craftspeople put the spotlight on the skills and techniques that have been used by pewter makers for decades. In the Amos workshop, honoured traditions of the craft are practiced alongside technologies of the modern world.

Amos Pewter has won awards for excellence in craftsmanship and design from the Nova Scotia Designer Craft Council. Our skilled staff knows the value of quality craftsmanship and will take the time to help customers recognize the hallmarks of quality workmanship.

Amos Pewter is a member of the Economuseum network whose mission is to showcase traditional trades and skills. Originally established in Quebec, the network has as well created a presence in the Maritimes. Amos Pewter was the first artisan shop in Nova Scotia to join the Economuseum network.

In the early days, Amos artisans enjoyed engaging in conversation about their craft with people who visited. From those modest beginnings, they have created a year-round tourism based business, linked to the history and craft of pewter-making, innovative design, their coastal environment, and the very best in customer service.

Today, the workshop within the store is designed so that customers can interact with craftspeople. Molten pewter is cast into jewelry, picture frames and ornaments. Pewter discs are spun on a lathe into vases and candlesticks. Exhibits and interpretive panels tell the story of pewter. Careful renovation has preserved the historical character of the original building.

As a business rooted in a historic craft, Amos Pewter is a unique place to visit. Customers quickly become engaged in conversation with the friendly staff, who will share their knowledge and skills of pewter making as well as the best chowder in town!

The Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia when presenting their Tourism Services Award of Excellence stated: "Amos Pewter have been referred to as the silent ambassadors for Nova Scotia, as the nature themes embodied in their pewter is enjoyed in homes around the world. They are committed to preserving a healthy environment and have taken an active role within the community to protect the wealth of natural resources."
